TOMCATS TOO HOT TO HANDLE

Tomcats Too Hot to Handle

TOMCAT FOOTBALL

Athletic Staff | 9/9/2023

Last night's football game in Chico was nothing short of electrifying, and the Tomcats came out of the gate as hot as the 109 degree heat. The excitement began with Hagen Darney, who returned the opening kickoff 89 yards as he broke tackles and set the tone for the evening.

As the game got underway, Daniel Ruiz showcased his kicking skills, first nailing the PAT, and then executing a beautiful pooch kick on the ensuing kickoff. Chico was unable to control the kick, resulting in a fumble that we were quick to recover.

Just two plays later, Bobby Rogers would dash for a remarkable 38-yard touchdown, leaving the opposition in awe. The early score put us up 13-0, and the momentum was clearly on our side.

With two quick scores, the Tomcat defense would finally take the field. They were equally as impressive as the other two phases of the game, as evidenced by Bobby Rogers' interception on Chico's first offensive play. This turnover set our offense up at the 35-yard line, and we capitalized on it. Maguire Poole, our running back, delivered back-to-back 14-yard runs, capping off the drive with a 7-yard touchdown rush. With just over 10 minutes left in the first quarter, we found ourselves with an impressive 20-0 lead.

The dominance continued as our defense forced the Dragons into a swift 3-and-out. Our offense, led by a confident quarterback, moved the ball effectively, and Daniel Ruiz contributed once again with a successful field goal attempt from the 6-yard line, extending our lead to 23-0.

However, just as the game seemed to be firmly in our control, a sudden and unexpected lightning delay struck on the third play of the Dragons' next possession. Despite hopes of resuming the game later, it was eventually called off for safety reasons, leaving us with an unfinished contest but a significant lead.

Individual performances shone brightly throughout the short-lived game. Bobby Rogers made an impact on both sides of the ball, tallying 3 tackles and 1 interception on defense, while also showcasing his offensive prowess with a 38-yard rushing touchdown. Maguire Poole had an impressive 5 carries for 76 yards, contributing 1 touchdown to our score. Collin Cherry added to the defensive effort with 1 tackle and 1 pressure, and Drake Franzeo chipped in with 2 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. Additionally, Daniel Ruiz displayed his versatility with 1 tackle for loss.

Though the game ended prematurely due to unforeseen circumstances, our team's performance was nothing short of spectacular. The combination of explosive plays on offense and stifling defense showed that we had the potential for a remarkable night of football.

If you're one of the many that left the stadium excited for the next opportunity to see our team in action, or you have been waiting to catch a game, come on out on Friday, September 15 as the Tomcats face off against Como-Pickton on Homecoming.
